Political Rappers Making a Splash on The Hip Hop Scene

Since day one, there have always been MC’s who have taken a political stance, like KRS One, Public Enemy, and Dead Prez to name a few. Too add to the list, there is a much longer list of rappers who are considered political, but they actually just have a more socially conscious attitude, like Nas, Grandmaster Flash, Poor Righteous Teachers etc. On top of that, we have some very strong Black Nationalists like Tupac, Brand Nubian and Sistaer Souljah.

Today there is a new breed of highly intellectual, verbally gifted and charismatic MC’s that are really starting to make a big impact on the scene. The two at the front of mind, and actually the catalysts for this article, are Immortal Technique and Lupe Fiasco.

I have been a fan of Lupe Fiasco since day one, because of his style and flow, but also because of his ability to step to the plate and actually use the soapbox that he has to help educate the masses, something that mainstream media has shown to be incapable of doing. Lupe Fiasco has fortunately been able to keep his mainstream appeal while collecting masses of politically motivated and intelligent music fans. If anything, going political is a risky endeavor, because it isn’t like labels, who undoubtedly have political ties, are clamoring to sign and promote artists who are making waves, or who are potentially spreading contradictory messages.

Lupe Fiasco has balls. Not only does he stand by his political convictions, but he stepped to the plate and went head to head with not only one of Americas best known political right wingers, but a man know for his unrelenting condescending and aggressive nature.
I have watched the video on Youtube several times and can only compliment Lupe for standing his ground, and bringing it to the table.[Combined views of 500,000] It’s difficult to put into words how I felt watching Lupe during the debate, but proud comes to mind. Lupe hasn’t stood down either, his latest single “Around My Way” (Freedom Ain’t Free) adds additional commentary to the injustice of the current political landscape.

The next rapper who seems to be gaining momentum as we speak, is Immortal Technique. The independent artist has roots in the rap battle scene, and may be the most educated and well spoken MC in the game. If you are not familiar with him yet, he recently released his latest album The Martyr for free, so download it and you will undoubtedly become a huge fan.

I was recently pointed in his direction by a friend who heard him on a Joe Rogan podcast and instantly called me to inform me of the MC. Of course my interest was sparked, and I did my due diligence. Not only does this guy no what he is talking about, but his flow and lyrics are FIRE. Don’t believe me? Listen to his track Eye In The Sky.

Eye In The Sky (Chorus)
I am the eye in the sky looking at you, I can read your mind
I am the maker of rules, dealing with fools, I can cheat you blind

I can’t reinforce how impressive I think it is for these MC’s to avoid the easy path of rhyming about the good life. Just to be clear, I am a big fan of all artists, as there is more than enough room for every stance, whether it be party rock, gangsta rap, or educated content with a message. Either way, make sure to support these artists by buying their records and attending their shows. Even if you don’t have a political bone in your body, you will not be let down by their performances.
